Rasmus Thellufsen set to headline Birżebbuġa’s ambitious summer rebuild

Danish midfielder Rasmus Thellufsen has emerged as one of the major names in Birżebbuġa St Peter’s summer recruitment drive, with Malta Sport understanding that the former Denmark youth international is set to join the newly-promoted Malta Premier side.

Thellufsen, 29, brings a strong CV to the southerners. A central midfielder by trade, he has played in Denmark, Germany, the United States and Norway, with spells at AaB, Lyngby, Hansa Rostock, Louisville City, Vendsyssel and Bryne. Transfermarkt lists him as a former Denmark Under-21 international, with three caps, and currently without a club after leaving Bryne.

His profile fits the type of experience Birżebbuġa are trying to add before their historic top-flight campaign. Thellufsen came through AaB, made his senior breakthrough in the Danish Superliga, later had a spell in Germany with Hansa Rostock, and was also part of the Lyngby side that won promotion back to Denmark’s top division. Louisville City also described him as a former Denmark youth international who had played in Denmark’s top league before moving to the United States.

This development follows reports by in-Nazzjon that Birżebbuġa are in advanced talks with former Ajax and Chelsea forward Daishawn Redan, who is being viewed as another high-profile target for the newly-promoted club.

Malta Sport had already exclusively revealed that Alessandro Coppola, Shaun Dimech and Jackson Mendoza are also expected to be part of the southerners’ plans. Thellufsen now appears to be another important piece in what is becoming one of the most ambitious transfer windows in recent years for a newly-promoted Maltese club.

Malta Sport also understands that Gabriel Costa and Gustavo Felipe de Campos Gonçalves, both recently released by Naxxar Lions, are also expected to join Birżebbuġa as the club continues to strengthen its squad.

Interestingly, while this portal was conducting further investigations into other players who may be joining Maltese clubs in the top tier, another name being discussed was Pietro Tomaselli, a 21-year-old Belgian-Italian central midfielder.

The player recently visited Malta with his entourage and is believed to be in talks with the same club. Tomaselli came through the youth systems of Anderlecht and Roma, making him another intriguing profile on Birżebbuġa’s radar.

Should these deals be completed, Birżebbuġa St Peter’s would be making a strong statement before their first Malta Premier campaign. With Thellufsen now at the centre of their plans, the southerners appear determined to build a squad with both profile and substance.
