Costa Rican midfielder Johan Bonilla is set to leave Gżira United after just one season at the club, with sources indicating that the player is expected to continue his career in the Malta Premier League.
Gżira United have already confirmed Bonilla’s departure through their social media channels, thanking the midfielder for his service and wishing him well for the future as he prepares for a new chapter in his career.
Bonilla joined the Maroons ahead of the 2025/26 season and quickly established himself as an important member of the squad. The Costa Rican midfielder brought energy, technical quality and versatility to the team, operating in a variety of midfield roles throughout the campaign.

During his season with Gżira United, Bonilla featured regularly in both league and cup competitions, becoming known for his ability to retain possession, progress the ball through midfield and contribute to attacking moves. His work ethic and consistency made him a valuable asset for the Maroons during the season, with him also winning the MVP of the match on more than one occasion.
Sources close to Malta Sport have indicated that, despite leaving Gżira United, Bonilla is expected to remain in the Malta Premier League. At this stage, however, his next club has not yet been revealed, with several sides understood to be monitoring his situation ahead of the new campaign.
The coming weeks are expected to provide greater clarity regarding the Costa Rican’s future, but all indications suggest that Maltese football supporters have not seen the last of Johan Bonilla in the Premier League.
