Malta Sport can reveal that Mtarfa FC, a club competing in the BOV Challenge League, is facing serious allegations of financial misconduct, unpaid wages and player intimidation.
Multiple sources have confirmed to Malta Sport that several players who represented the club during the 2024-2025 season are owed several months’ worth of unpaid salaries, with some allegedly still waiting for payments dating back to September 2024.
When asked by Malta Sport, sources close to the matter confirmed that several players are owed thousands of euros in arrears, with growing frustration over the club’s silence and lack of transparency. According to one insider, the situation escalated when the club’s president began contacting players individually, urging them to sign settlement agreements that promise future payment. These players were allegedly told that unless they sign by the end of this week, the club would be dissolved and no further payments would be made.
In response to these revelations, the Malta Football Players Association (MFPA) confirmed to Malta Sport that it is fully aware of the situation involving Mtarfa FC. The association stated that it has been actively representing fifteen players before the Complaints Board in recent months and has successfully won all cases brought forward on their behalf.
The MFPA said that the issue is severe, with some players unpaid since September and others since January. The situation was so dire at one point that the MFPA had to intervene directly to assist the foreign players, some of whom were facing serious financial difficulties. We ensured they had the basic necessities and a roof over their heads, a spokesperson told Malta Sport.
The MFPA also confirmed that Mtarfa FC is currently barred from registering new players unless they settle all outstanding dues or reach formal payment agreements with the affected players.
When responding to Malta Sport’s questions regarding allegations of mounting pressure on players to sign settlement agreements, the MFPA did not mince words. We are aware of reports that players are being asked to sign agreements with vague promises of future payment. Any such behaviour is wholly unacceptable. Asking players to waive their rightful claims under the premise that the club will be dissolved and they will receive nothing is a clear abuse of power. It reflects a complete lack of responsibility and integrity. The MFPA further confirmed that it has engaged in discussions with the Malta Football Association regarding the Mtarfa situation and is currently awaiting a decision from the Licensing Board on possible disciplinary measures against the club.
As the week draws to a close and the alleged ultimatum given by the Mtarfa official approaches, the future of Mtarfa FC remains uncertain. Players and their representatives continue to demand answers and justice. At the heart of it all is the hope that players will finally receive what they are rightfully owed and that no player will have to endure such instability again.
