The Malta Football Association has officially conducted the draws for the 2026/27 senior and youth domestic competitions, confirming the opening fixtures and season formats across the various leagues.
The draws, which were broadcast live on TVMSport+ and streamed via the Malta FA’s YouTube channel, outlined the fixture schedules for the BOV Challenge League, the newly named BOV National Leagues, the Assikura Women’s competitions and the BOV Youth Leagues.
BOV Challenge League
The BOV Challenge League will once again feature 16 clubs, with the competition following the same format as last season.
Teams will contest a single round of 15 matches before the league splits into two groups. The top eight sides will compete in the Top Eight Group, while the remaining teams will enter the Play-Out Group, with clubs facing each other once more within their respective sections.
At the end of the campaign, the top two teams from the Top Eight Group will earn promotion to the Malta Premier, while the bottom two sides in the Play-Out Group will be relegated.
The new season gets underway on 12 and 13 September, with several attractive opening fixtures, including Pietà Hotspurs vs Naxxar Lions, while newly promoted Attard and Victoria Hotspurs begin their campaigns against Swieqi United and St Andrews respectively.
Assikura Women’s League
The Assikura Women’s League will continue with six teams, competing across four rounds, giving each club a total of 20 league matches.
The team finishing at the top of the standings will be crowned champions and qualify for the UEFA Women’s Champions League.
The league begins between 17 and 19 September, with reigning champions Mġarr United opening their title defence against Valletta FC. Elsewhere, Birkirkara will face San Ġwann, while Swieqi United take on Hibernians.
BOV National League I
The former third tier enters a new era under the name BOV National League I.
The division has been reduced to 12 teams, with each side playing 22 matches over two rounds.
The top two clubs will secure promotion, while the bottom two will be relegated to BOV National League II.
The competition starts on 19 and 20 September, with recently relegated Marsa taking on newly promoted Kalkara United, while Pembroke Athleta face Qormi among the opening fixtures.
BOV National League II
The fourth tier has also been rebranded as BOV National League II and will feature 14 teams, an increase from last season.
Each club will play 26 matches across two rounds, with the top two earning promotion to National League I. The bottom two clubs will be required to reapply for participation in next season’s competition.
The opening round is scheduled for 12 and 13 September, featuring notable fixtures including Mdina Knights vs Rabat Ajax and Msida St Joseph vs Kirkop United.
Women’s Youth League
The Assikura Women’s Youth League will also consist of six teams competing over four rounds, with every club playing 20 matches during the season.
The competition is set to begin between 15 and 16 September.
BOV Youth Leagues
The draws for all four BOV Youth League divisions were also completed ahead of the new campaign.
The BOV Youth League A will kick off on 31 August, followed by Youth League B on 1 September. Meanwhile, Youth Leagues C and D will commence on 7 October and 8 October, respectively.
With the fixtures now confirmed, clubs across Malta can begin their preparations for what promises to be another competitive and exciting domestic football season.
