Marsaxlokk have continued to strengthen their squad ahead of the new season with the signing of Brazilian forward Matheus Silva.
The 29-year-old centre-forward is expected to form part of Enzo Potenza’s squad for the UEFA Conference League, as the Southseasiders prepare for their first qualifying round tie against Armenian side FC Pyunik.
Silva arrives as an experienced attacking option with a well-travelled football background. Standing at 1.93m, the Brazilian adds height, physical presence and another focal point in attack for a Marsaxlokk side that is clearly building with both domestic and European commitments in mind.
The striker started his career in the FC Porto setup before returning to Brazil, where he went on to represent a number of clubs including Coimbra, Novorizontino, Comercial, Bangu, Cascavel, Nova Mutum, Brasiliense and Real Noroeste.
His career later took him across several football markets, including Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, Tajikistan, Honduras and Iraq. His most recent club was Al-Zawraa SC, one of Iraq’s established sides, giving Marsaxlokk a forward who has already dealt with different styles of football and demanding environments.
For Marsaxlokk, this is a move aimed at adding depth and options in the final third. With European football approaching quickly, the club needed more solutions up front, particularly against a Pyunik side with far greater experience on the continental stage.
Silva is not expected to be just a squad number. His profile suggests Marsaxlokk have brought him in to offer a direct attacking presence, hold-up play and a penalty-box threat, qualities that can become crucial in tight European qualifiers where small moments often decide the tie.
The Southseasiders have already been active in the market, with Andrea Cassar, Lucas Caruana and Oleksiy Bykov among the new arrivals, while several key foreign players have also been retained. The addition of Silva further underlines the club’s intention to be competitive, not only in the Malta Premier League but also in Europe.
Marsaxlokk will open their UEFA Conference League campaign against FC Pyunik on 9 July, with the return leg scheduled for 16 July. Silva’s inclusion in the squad gives Potenza another important weapon as the club looks to make its mark on the European stage.
After a strong domestic campaign, Marsaxlokk are now trying to turn stability into progress. The signing of Matheus Silva is another clear sign that the club is not treating European football as a formality, but as an opportunity.
