Malta’s head coach Michele Marcolini and goalkeeper Henry Bonello spoke to the media prior to their Nations League League D Group 2 match against Moldova. The press briefing occurred on the day before the eagerly awaited match, with both figures emphasising the upcoming challenges and laying out the team’s objectives.
Coach Michele Marcolini recognised the tough road ahead, referring to Moldova as the most formidable team in the group “on paper.” He commended Moldova for their strong Euro 2024 qualifying performance, during which they achieved an impressive win against Poland, a team that ultimately advanced to the final tournament. Marcolini mentioned that Moldova’s performance and their victory over a prominent football nation underscore the challenge Malta will confront.

The coach underscored the challenge of facing Moldova in Chișinău, noting their home-field advantage. He anticipated a vigorous performance from Moldova, spurred by their veteran players. Marcolini pointed out the importance of experienced Moldovan midfielder Artur Ioniță, who has honed his skills in Italy, alongside other rising stars gaining recognition internationally. He emphasised that the experience acquired abroad would greatly aid Moldova in crucial international fixtures like this one.
Reflecting on his own path, Marcolini mentioned that upon arriving in Malta, he realised the Nations League would be the main objective. Now that the competition has commenced, he is excited to begin this new journey. He highlighted Malta’s primary aim of winning matches and achieving qualification, making this campaign a pivotal focus for the national team.
Marcolini also addressed the difficulties brought about by injuries during this international period. Malta has faced several setbacks, with Steve Borg and Enrico Pepe sidelined due to injury. Furthermore, there are concerns regarding Teddy Teuma’s fitness, as he has only managed limited playing time this season before sustaining an injury. Teuma’s involvement in the upcoming match is highly uncertain, leaving Marcolini with challenging choices for the starting lineup.
The team aims to start strongly as they face Moldova today at the Zimbru Stadium in Chișinău, with kick-off scheduled for 18:00.

Malta’s predicted lineup:
Henry Bonello, Zach Muscat, Jean Borg, Kurt Shaw, Joseph Mbong, Ryan Camenzuli, Matthew Guillaumier, Yannick Yankam, Teddy Teuma/Steve Pisani, Paul Mbong, Kemar Reid.
