Gżira United sign Portuguese left back Filipe Maio on a one-year deal

Gżira United have confirmed the signing of Portuguese left back Filipe Bartolomeu Maio on a one-year contract as the Maroons continue shaping their squad for the 2026/27 campaign.

The 27-year-old defender joins the club after building his career across the Portuguese football pyramid, bringing experience, physical presence and competition to the left side of Gżira’s defence.

Maio arrives with a solid background in Portuguese football, having represented clubs including Cova da Piedade, Oliveirense, São João de Ver, Amora FC, Sporting Covilhã and Sanjoanense. He also spent part of his youth development with the academies of Sporting CP, Vitória Guimarães and Boavista, three clubs with established reputations for producing players in Portugal.

A natural left back with a strong left foot, Maio is expected to give Gżira more balance on the flank. His profile suggests a defender who can offer both defensive cover and support in wide attacking areas, something that will be important for a side looking to become more competitive and more consistent next season.

The Maroons described the signing as one that adds quality, versatility and experience to the squad. For Gżira, this is another move aimed at strengthening key areas after a campaign in which the club will know that improvement is required.

The addition of Maio also gives the technical staff more options in a position where depth can be decisive across a long domestic season. His experience in Portugal’s lower professional levels should help him adapt quickly to the demands of Maltese football, where physical battles, tactical discipline and consistency are often decisive.

For the player, the move to Malta represents a new chapter outside Portugal and an opportunity to establish himself in the Malta Premier.

For Gżira United, his arrival is part of the wider effort to rebuild and stabilise the squad ahead of the new season, with the Maroons looking to put together a group capable of competing strongly in 2026/27.
