Former Hellas Verona goalkeeper Mattia Chiesa is expected to become the latest addition to Birżebbuġa St. Peter’s as the newly-promoted Malta Premier side continue to strengthen their squad ahead of the new season.
MaltaSport understands that the 25-year-old Italian goalkeeper was spotted arriving at Malta International Airport on Monday evening, where he was welcomed by Birżebbuġa St. Peter’s club officials, further fuelling speculation that an agreement is close.

Chiesa, who came through the ranks at Hellas Verona, has gained experience across Italian football with spells at Virtus Verona, Trento and Mantova before spending last season with Sporting Dubai. Earlier this year, he also featured for Slovenian side ND Gorica after leaving Verona.

Standing at 1.90 metres, the goalkeeper would add valuable experience to Birżebbuġa’s squad as the club prepares for its historic first campaign in the Malta Premier League.
Should the move be completed, Chiesa would represent another high-profile addition to an increasingly ambitious Birżebbuġa St. Peter’s squad. The club has been one of the busiest in the transfer market this summer, targeting players with strong professional backgrounds as it looks to establish itself in the Malta Premier League.
While no official announcement has yet been made by the club, all indications suggest Chiesa is on the verge of completing the move, with Birżebbuġa appearing set to secure another statement signing as the club continues to strengthen every department ahead of the new campaign
