Brazilian defender Rodolfo Soares has announced his retirement from football at the age of 41, bringing the curtain down on a career spanning more than two decades and several clubs in the Maltese Premier League.
Soares spent a significant part of his career in Malta, becoming a familiar figure after representing Sliema Wanderers, Mosta FC, Naxxar Lions, Hibernians and, most recently, St Andrews FC, where he made his final appearances before deciding to hang up his boots.
The experienced centre-back first arrived in Malta with Sliema Wanderers before enjoying spells with Mosta, Naxxar Lions and Hibernians, earning a reputation as a commanding defender thanks to his aerial ability, physical presence and leadership at the back.
His final chapter came at St Andrews FC, where he continued to bring his vast experience to the dressing room while mentoring younger players before announcing his retirement.
In an emotional farewell letter, Soares reflected on the sacrifices behind his career, admitting that football had given him unforgettable memories but had also tested him through moments of anxiety, loneliness and disappointment.
Despite those challenges, he said he leaves the game without regrets, believing he gave everything every time he stepped onto the pitch.
The Brazilian thanked every club, coach, teammate, member of staff and supporter who accompanied him throughout his journey, while paying special tribute to his family for standing by him during both the highs and lows of professional football.
Describing football as his “school, passion and purpose”, Soares said the lessons the game taught him—including discipline, resilience, humility and perseverance—will remain with him for life.
His retirement marks the end of a distinguished playing career, with Soares leaving behind a lasting legacy in Maltese football after representing five local clubs and becoming one of the league’s most respected foreign professionals over the past decade.
