Pietà Hotspurs etched their name into the history books by winning the first-ever edition of the BOV Challenge Cup. In a thrilling final played at the National Stadium in Ta’ Qali, Pietà secured a narrow 1-0 victory over BOV Challenge League champions Valletta FC.
The BOV Challenge Cup is a newly introduced competition born from the long-term collaboration between Bank of Valletta and the Malta Football Association, featuring all BOV Challenge League teams in a knockout format. Pietà emerged unbeaten throughout the tournament to lift the prestigious trophy.
Pietà started the match on the front foot, taking the initiative early on. However, it was Valletta who created the better chances in the first half, only to be denied by Pietà goalkeeper Cini and the woodwork, sending both sides into halftime with the scoreline locked at 0-0.
The breakthrough came in the 52nd minute when Zean Leonardi found the back of the net. Pietà maintained control for the remainder of the match, successfully resisting Valletta’s late push to stage a comeback, and ultimately clinching the victory.
Stefan Abela, CSR Manager at Bank of Valletta, and Matthew Paris, Vice President of the Malta Football Association, presented the BOV Challenge Cup trophy to Pietà amid jubilant celebrations from the loyal Pietà supporters at the Centenary Stadium.
This historic win not only marks a major achievement for Pietà but also highlights the successful partnership between Bank of Valletta and the Malta Football Association, promoting a healthy and active lifestyle across the Maltese islands and creating exciting new competitions for the enjoyment of players and fans alike.
