One of the biggest names ever to grace Maltese football has officially arrived.
Former France international Mathieu Valbuena has completed his move to Challenge League side Santa Lucia FC, in what is undoubtedly one of the most high-profile signings in the history of the Maltese game.
The 41-year-old attacking midfielder boasts a glittering career at the highest level of European football. Valbuena earned 52 caps for France, scoring eight goals, and represented Les Bleus at both the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa and the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.
At club level, Valbuena made his name during an outstanding spell with Olympique Marseille, where he won the Ligue 1 title and three Coupe de la Ligue trophies. He later featured for Dynamo Moscow, Lyon, Fenerbahçe, Olympiacos and most recently Olympiacos B, building a career that has spanned France, Russia, Turkey and Greece.
Renowned for his creativity, vision, close control and ability to unlock defences, Valbuena has played alongside and against some of the biggest names in world football throughout his career.
His arrival is another statement of intent from Santa Lucia’s ambitious new ownership, who have invested heavily as they target promotion back to the Malta Premier. The Frenchman now becomes the standout attraction in the Challenge League and one of the most decorated players ever to compete in the Maltese football pyramid.
