Malta 2 Faroe Islands 0
Tony Bezzina Stadium, Paola
The Maltese girls were looking to continue their fine run of form after their splendid historic qualification in the UEFA Nations League in this friendly match against the Faroe Islands.
Malta had the first chance with a shot by Brenda Borg that went just over the bar. Haley Bugeja’s speed almost created a good opportunity a minute later, but Alishia Sultana could not manage to conclude. A shot by Maria Farrugia on 15 minutes hit the side netting. Malta continued pushing forward with the Faroe Islands not getting much of a look in, but the local forwards were frequently caught offside.
The Faroe Islands had an excellent chance to open the scoring on the stroke of half time, but Runa Jacobsen’s shot was well saved by Janice Xuereb.
Malta finally went ahead on 54 minutes after a well-executed move. Rachel Cuschieri released Haley Bugeja who entered the box and squared to Alishia Sultana who made no mistake with a low shot into the net. The second came just four minutes later through a superb individual effort by Haley Bugeja who beat the Faroe defence with sheer speed and cooly lobbed into the net.
The Faroe Islands attempted a reaction but rarely troubled Xuereb whilst Bugeja continued to cause havoc with her probing runs but somehow no one was on hand to finish off. In the end it was a relatively easy victory for Manuela Tesse’s girls who notched off another good win.
