Athletic Bilbao have confirmed that Nico Williams has signed a new eight-year contract, keeping him at the club until 2035. This move puts an end to the rumours linking him with a transfer to Barcelona.
Williams, who has been at the club since 2013, will now have a much higher release clause, reportedly close to €80 million.
Speaking about the new deal, Williams said:
“When making decisions, I always follow my heart. I’m happy here, with my people. This is my home.”
Due to registration issues, a move to Barcelona this summer isn’t possible, according to football journalist Fabrizio Romano.
Nico made his senior debut in 2021 and has since played 131 La Liga games, scoring 16 goals. He’s also netted 15 goals in other competitions. On the international stage, he played a key role in Spain’s Euro 2024 title win.
Bilbao finished fourth in La Liga last season, qualifying for the Champions League, and also reached the Europa League semi-finals.
Barcelona, who had been chasing Williams, will now have to look elsewhere for a quick winger. Reports say talks with Liverpool’s Luis Díaz have broken down, leaving Barça to search for a new option.
