La Liga introduces VAR challenge system following Real Madrid refereeing controversy

La Liga is set to undergo a major transformation in the 2025–26 season as Spanish football authorities move to overhaul the Video Assistant Referee system to improve transparency and accountability. The changes follow a season dominated by controversy, particularly involving Real Madrid and persistent criticism of refereeing decisions.

Starting next season, coaches in La Liga will be allowed to challenge refereeing decisions using a new VAR appeal system. According to Spanish outlet COPE Radio, each manager will have two VAR challenges per match. If a coach’s challenge results in a decision being overturned, the team will retain the right to make an additional appeal. However, if the original decision stands, no further challenges will be permitted.

The reform comes in the wake of a volatile campaign in which Real Madrid’s official media frequently criticised officiating, leading to escalating tensions between the club and Spain’s referees. The situation reached a boiling point when the referees’ union filed legal action against the club over what it described as coordinated attacks on match officials.

The Spanish Referees Committee believes the new system will bring clarity to controversial moments and allow managers to play an active role in demanding video reviews. Supporters of the initiative argue that it mirrors successful challenge systems used in sports such as tennis and cricket.

FIFA’s head of refereeing Pierluigi Collina has confirmed that the VAR challenge system is under international observation. The new model was officially approved by football’s law-making body IFAB in March and could become a global standard if proven effective in Spain.

The 2025–26 La Liga season will begin with this new protocol in place, and all eyes will be on how it affects game management and match outcomes. While the system is expected to spark debate and adjustment, it represents one of the most significant shifts in how the game is officiated in modern football.
