Barcelona restructures stadium debt, postpones bond repayment to 2033

FC Barcelona has announced the successful restructuring of a significant portion of its stadium renovation debt, selling €424 million in bonds and postponing its first repayment from 2028 to 2033. The move is part of the club’s broader financial strategy to manage the €1.45 billion in funding it secured last year for the redevelopment of the historic Camp Nou.

The restructuring was facilitated by Goldman Sachs, which acted as financial adviser to the Catalan club. Under the new agreement, the €424 million tranche will now be repaid gradually between 2033 and 2050, offering Barcelona a longer window to manage its repayments. The average cost of the refinanced debt stands at 5.19%.

The original financing package, secured in 2023 from a group of 20 investors including banking giants JP Morgan and Goldman Sachs, had set repayment tranches at five, seven, nine, 20, and 24-year intervals. The new structure significantly delays the financial pressure on the club as it continues its most ambitious infrastructure project to date.

Barcelona said in a statement that it is “fulfilling the necessary steps to ensure a gradual and staggered repayment” of the stadium debt, underlining its commitment to financial sustainability despite recent fiscal challenges.

The revamped Camp Nou is expected to be a major revenue driver, with the club projecting an annual increase of more than €200 million. These gains are anticipated to come from enhanced sponsorship deals, naming rights, ticketing, catering, VIP experiences, and non-football events hosted at the new facility.

A partial reopening of the stadium is scheduled for August 10, when Barcelona’s men’s first team will play a friendly match at the venue, marking the beginning of a new era at Camp Nou.
