Atletico Madrid have completed the signing of Argentina international Cristian Romero from Tottenham for a reported €40 million (£34.3m), including add-ons.
The 28-year-old centre-back has signed a contract with Atletico until 30 June 2031, bringing an end to his five-year spell in north London.
Romero made 156 appearances for Tottenham and played an important role in the club’s Europa League triumph in 2025, when Spurs ended a 17-year wait for a major trophy. He was named Man of the Match in the final victory over Manchester United.
The Argentina defender leaves Tottenham after also helping his country win the 2022 World Cup. He was part of the Argentina squad that reached the 2026 World Cup final, where they were beaten by Spain.
Romero said goodbye to Tottenham supporters on Friday, admitting that his journey with the club “wasn’t perfect” but that he was leaving with “enormous pride”.
His move to Atletico comes shortly after fellow Argentina World Cup winner Nahuel Molina left the Spanish club for Roma in a reported €17m deal.
Romero becomes Atletico’s fourth signing of the summer, following Alejandro Grimaldo, Kang-in Lee and Morten Hjulmand.
