Arsenal are reportedly preparing a blockbuster move for Atlético Madrid striker Julián Álvarez, with the Premier League champions ready to offer Viktor Gyökeres plus a substantial cash payment in an attempt to land the Argentine international.
According to The Times, manager Mikel Arteta has identified Álvarez as his priority attacking target and believes the World Cup winner has the qualities needed to lead Arsenal’s frontline.
Despite helping Argentina reach the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, Álvarez endured a disappointing tournament by his own high standards and now faces an uncertain future in Madrid.
The 25-year-old is understood to favour a move to Barcelona, but Atlético Madrid have reportedly made it clear they will not negotiate with their La Liga rivals, regardless of the size of any offer from the Catalan club.
That stance has opened the door for Arsenal, who are now exploring an ambitious proposal.
The reported package would include €100 million in cash, together with Swedish striker Viktor Gyökeres, who is valued at between €65 million and €70 million. The overall deal could therefore reach a value of around €170 million.
Although Gyökeres enjoyed respectable statistics during his first season in north London, scoring 21 goals in 55 appearances, reports suggest Arsenal are looking for a forward better suited to Arteta’s possession-based style, with Álvarez viewed as a striker capable of linking play, pressing from the front and creating opportunities for teammates.
For Atlético Madrid, such a deal would provide significant financial resources to strengthen other areas of the squad while also bringing in a proven international striker in Gyökeres, whose physical style is considered by some to be well suited to Spanish football.
Any negotiations are expected to intensify once Álvarez returns to Madrid following his post-World Cup break. The Argentine is expected to hold talks with Atlético over his future before deciding whether to remain in the Spanish capital or seek a move elsewhere.
With Barcelona effectively ruled out of the race for now, Arsenal are waiting in the wings, hoping their record-breaking proposal will be enough to convince Atlético Madrid to do business.
