Luciano Spalletti will no longer be the manager of the Italian national team. After some time for reflection, the decision was made and Spalletti confirmed it in a press conference. His final match in charge will be against Moldova on Monday.
FIGC President Gabriele Gravina spoke earlier in the day at a press conference, trying to explain the national team’s difficult moment and the growing rumours that Spalletti’s time was coming to an end. Gravina admitted Spalletti’s future looked uncertain and said a final decision hadn’t yet been made. But now it’s official, Spalletti will step down after Monday’s match.
The decision comes after Italy’s heavy defeat against Norway, which has put the team at serious risk of missing the World Cup for the third time in a row. A meeting between Gravina and Spalletti was originally set for Tuesday to decide the coach’s future, but the decision came earlier, on Sunday, 8 June. On Tuesday, Spalletti will officially end his contract with the Italian Football Federation.
