Former Spain and Barcelona captain Sergio Busquets will hang up his boots at the conclusion of the Major League Soccer season in December.
The 38-year-old Inter Miami midfielder enjoyed a glittering 18-year spell at Barcelona, collecting 32 major trophies, including nine La Liga titles and three Champions League crowns.
On the international stage, Busquets earned 143 caps for Spain, playing a central role in their 2010 World Cup triumph and Euro 2012 victory.
In 2023, he moved to Inter Miami, reuniting with former Barça teammates Lionel Messi, Jordi Alba, and Luis Suárez.
“I feel the moment has arrived to say farewell to my career as a professional footballer. Nearly 20 years of living out the dream I always wished for,” Busquets shared in a video on social media.
“I retire with happiness, pride, fulfillment, and, above all, gratitude. Thank you all so much — see you soon.”
Busquets began his Barcelona journey in 2005 as a youth player, rising through the B team before making his senior debut under Pep Guardiola in a 2008 league match against Racing Santander.
Over his career at Camp Nou, he featured in 722 games, the third-highest tally in club history.
He made his Spain debut in 2009 and bowed out from international duty in December 2022 as the nation’s third-most capped player.
Meanwhile, Inter Miami sealed their spot in the MLS play-offs with a 4–0 win over New York City FC on Wednesday. The 18-team play-offs kick off on 22 October and conclude with the MLS Cup final on 6 December.
