The Sports Journalists Association of Kenya (SJAK) has issued a strong condemnation following a violent incident involving Daily Nation photojournalist Chris Omollo, who was assaulted by police during the Gor Mahia FC vs. Mara Sugar Premier League match on Sunday, April 27, 2025, at Dandora Stadium, Nairobi.
Omollo was rendered unconscious after being struck on the back of the head by a police officer. He is currently receiving medical treatment at a Nairobi hospital. The attack, described as entirely unprovoked, occurred despite Omollo and his fellow journalists having properly identified themselves and fully cooperated with officers of the Kenya Police Service stationed at the venue.
Journalists had been instructed to use a designated entrance to avoid congestion at the main gate. However, while complying with this directive, Omollo was reportedly assaulted by an unidentified officer, who also broke his eyeglasses in the process. Omollo—who has previously undergone head surgery—collapsed immediately and was rushed to hospital for emergency care.
In a strongly worded statement, SJAK President James Waindi denounced the incident:
“As SJAK, we unequivocally condemn this unprovoked and violent attack on a journalist. Such actions are not only unacceptable but also betray the spirit of sportsmanship. Sports journalists are instrumental in promoting the growth of sport in Kenya, and their safety while on duty must be protected at all costs.”
Waindi further demanded immediate disciplinary action against the officer involved and called upon both the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) and the Ministry of Interior to take urgent steps to curb the rising incidents of match-day violence.
“If FKF fails to act decisively, SJAK will have no choice but to mobilize a nationwide boycott of football coverage by sports journalists and impose a total media blackout,” he warned.
The incident has sparked widespread concern among media professionals and sports stakeholders, who are now calling for enhanced security protocols and greater accountability from authorities.
