Lionel Messi made an emotional return for Inter Miami on Wednesday, coming off the bench in the second half of their 3-2 defeat to Mexican side León in the final group match of the Leagues Cup.
The 39-year-old had been absent from Miami’s previous match following the death of his father, Jorge Messi, who passed away in Rosario, Argentina, last week at the age of 68 after a long illness.
Messi travelled back to Argentina for his father’s private funeral on Sunday before returning to the United States. He was named among the substitutes against León and entered the match at half-time to a huge reception from the Miami supporters.
His return came after Messi had spoken publicly about his future in football. In an emotional social media message following his father’s death, the Argentina captain admitted that he was unsure how much longer he would continue his playing career.
Jorge Messi played a major role throughout his son’s career, serving as his agent from the age of 14 and supporting him through his rise to becoming one of football’s greatest players. He was also by Messi’s side when Argentina won the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Messi had previously revealed that his father encouraged him to continue playing and compete at another World Cup despite his declining health.
Despite Messi’s return, Inter Miami suffered another defeat and were eliminated in the opening stage of the Leagues Cup for the first time since the competition was expanded in 2023. Miami had won the tournament in Messi’s first season with the club.
Inter Miami midfielder Yannick Bright praised Messi for returning so soon after his loss, describing his decision as a sign of how much the captain cares about his team.
León coach Javier Gandolfi also praised Messi, saying his appearance demonstrated his exceptional character during an extremely difficult period.
