Legal battle erupts as Mbappé and PSG file mega claims against each other

Kylian Mbappé and Paris Saint-Germain have become locked in an extraordinary legal battle, with both player and club suing each other for eye-watering sums that run into the hundreds of millions of euro.

France captain Mbappé has filed a claim for around €240 million in damages from PSG, arguing that his former club breached the terms of his contract and mistreated him during his final season in Paris. He says he was sidelined at the start of the 2023–24 campaign, forced to train with players the club wanted to move on and excluded from the pre-season tour of Asia after he refused to sign a new deal.

PSG have responded with a counterclaim of €180 million at the Paris labour court. The club argue that they suffered huge financial damage when a proposed €300 million transfer to Saudi side Al Hilal collapsed, a move Mbappé turned down before later joining Real Madrid on a free transfer. They say that by running down his contract and refusing the Saudi move, he cost them a record transfer fee.

The dispute stems from the tense standoff in the summer of 2023, when Mbappé declined to trigger an extension clause in his PSG contract. The club briefly froze him out of the first team before relations were patched up enough for him to return and finish the season. He eventually left for Madrid after seven seasons in Paris, during which he scored 256 goals in 308 games and became the club’s record scorer. Ironically, PSG finally lifted their first-ever Champions League trophy the season after he departed.

Beyond the eye-catching figures, the case shines a harsh light on the modern power struggle between superstar footballers and state-backed super clubs. Mbappé insists he is simply claiming what he is owed in unpaid bonuses and compensation for what he views as psychological pressure. PSG, for their part, argue that he acted in bad faith by protecting his own free transfer while undermining the club’s ability to recoup a fee.

The case, being heard in Paris’ labour court, could set an important precedent for contracts at the top end of world football, where salaries, bonuses and image rights now run into staggering numbers. A ruling is expected in the coming weeks, but whatever the outcome, the separation between Mbappé and PSG is proving every bit as dramatic as their years together on the pitch.
