Major League Soccer is investigating Inter Miami after the club completed the signing of Brazilian midfielder Casemiro.
The 34-year-old joined the club on Wednesday after leaving Manchester United at the end of last season. He has signed a contract until the end of the 2027 MLS season, with the option to stay until June 2029.
Soon after the transfer was announced, MLS confirmed it had started looking into a possible case of tampering involving Inter Miami.
The investigation is linked to Casemiro’s discovery rights. Under MLS rules, clubs can place players on a discovery list, giving them first opportunity to sign those players if they move to the league.
LA Galaxy held Casemiro’s discovery rights, but Inter Miami confirmed they had reached an agreement with the Galaxy to take over those rights. MLS said the details of the agreement will only be revealed once the investigation is complete.
Casemiro announced in January that he would leave Manchester United after both sides agreed not to extend his contract.
During his career, Casemiro won five UEFA Champions League titles with Real Madrid before joining Manchester United in 2022. He also played every match for Brazil as they reached the last 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Speaking after the move, Casemiro said his biggest motivation is to keep winning and improving.
During his time at Manchester United, he made 160 appearances, scored 26 goals and provided 14 assists. He also helped the club win the EFL Cup and the FA Cup.
Following his departure, United strengthened their midfield by signing Andrey Santos from Chelsea for £50 million and Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa for £35 million.
Inter Miami co-owner David Beckham described Casemiro as a winner with an outstanding career and said he was delighted the midfielder had chosen Miami as his next club.
At Inter Miami, Casemiro will play alongside former Real Madrid and Manchester United team-mate Sergio Reguilón, as well as Argentina internationals Lionel Messi and Rodrigo De Paul.
This is not the first time Inter Miami have faced an MLS investigation. In 2021, the club were fined $2 million after breaking league rules during the signing of French midfielder Blaise Matuidi from Juventus. The club was found to have exceeded the league’s limit on designated players, whose wages are not included in the MLS salary cap.
