German coach Sepp Piontek, who became a well-known figure in Denmark after helping turn the national team into a strong World Cup side, has died aged 85.
His family told TV2.dk that he passed away after a short illness.
Piontek became Denmark’s national coach in 1979. He led the team to the semi-finals of the 1984 European Championship and helped Denmark qualify for the World Cup for the first time in 1986.

Peter Møller, football director of the Danish Football Federation, praised Piontek for playing a major role in the development of Danish football.
He said Piontek’s time as coach marked the start of a new era, with Denmark becoming known for its attacking and brave style of play.
