Davide Mazzotta’s Malta U21 side impress in 1-1 draw against Estonia

Coach Davide Mazzotta began his tenure in charge of the Malta U21 National Team with a promising 1-1 draw against Estonia in an international friendly on Tuesday.

The match started cautiously, with both sides adjusting to the slick conditions caused by heavy rainfall. However, Malta increased their intensity in the 10th minute, as Nathan Cross surged down the right flank and delivered a dangerous cross, which was eventually cleared by the Estonian defense.

Malta registered their first shot on goal in the 16th minute when Andrew Borg unleashed a powerful strike from the edge of the penalty area. His effort was expertly saved by Estonian goalkeeper Ott Nõmm, who tipped the ball away for a corner.

Despite Malta’s pressure, Estonia took the lead in the 21st minute. Mustmaa Karel embarked on a surging run from midfield before slotting a low shot past Maltese goalkeeper Hugo Sacco to make it 1-0.

The young Maltese side responded immediately, equalizing in the 24th minute. A well-delivered corner from Nicholas Agius found Keyon Ewurum at the back post, and the forward directed a brilliant header into the net to level the score.

Estonia remained a threat on the counter, with Karel causing continuous problems for the Maltese defense. In the 35th minute, he nearly doubled his tally with a powerful strike, but Sacco produced a fine save, tipping the ball onto the post.

Malta came close to taking the lead before half-time when Alfie Bridgman cut in from the left and curled a stunning effort towards goal, only to be denied by another superb stop from Nõmm. The first half ended with the score locked at 1-1.

The second half saw a scrappier contest, with both teams struggling to control possession amid frequent stoppages. Estonia had a golden chance in the 78th minute when Karel Eerme was played through on goal, but Sacco did just enough to put him off, and the strike went wide.

Malta had opportunities to snatch a late winner. In the 86th minute, Zak Barbara struck a low free-kick under the wall, but Nõmm was again up to the task. Two minutes later, Isaiah Chukunyere set up Barbara down the left, and his cross found Kian Leonardi, but the Maltese forward failed to make clean contact.

Neither team could find the breakthrough in the closing stages, and the match ended in a well-fought 1-1 draw. Coach Mazzotta will be encouraged by his team’s resilience and attacking intent as they continue their development on the international stage.
