Christian Eriksen conscious after friendly abandoned following a on-pitch collapse

Christian Eriksen is conscious and doing well under the circumstances after collapsing during Denmark’s friendly match against Ukraine on Sunday evening.

The Denmark midfielder clutched his chest before falling to the ground during the second half, prompting immediate concern from players, officials and supporters inside the stadium.

Medical staff quickly entered the field of play as players from both teams gathered around Eriksen while he received treatment. The match was later abandoned.

Denmark were leading 2-1 at the time, with Patrick Dorgu and Joakim Maehle on target for the hosts before the match was halted.

The Danish Football Association later confirmed that Eriksen was conscious and doing well under the circumstances, with further updates expected on his condition.

The scenes brought back painful memories of Euro 2020, when Eriksen suffered a cardiac arrest during Denmark’s match against Finland in Copenhagen.

On that occasion, the former Tottenham Hotspur, Inter Milan and Manchester United midfielder was resuscitated on the pitch before being taken to the hospital.

Eriksen later made a remarkable return to professional football after being fitted with an implantable cardioverter defibrillator, going on to represent both club and country again at the highest level.

Sunday’s incident once again left the football world united in concern for the Danish midfielder, with messages of support expected to pour in from across the game.

For now, the main relief is that Eriksen is conscious, with football taking second place on a night where the player’s health became the only matter of importance.
