Carlos Queiroz has left his position as Ghana head coach following the team’s disappointing 4-2 defeat to Gambia in Africa Cup of Nations qualifying.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) confirmed that it had mutually agreed with the Portuguese coach to end his contract, just one month after he was reappointed.
Queiroz said the decision was made because the necessary conditions were not in place and the team’s recent results had contributed to the decision.
Ghana had taken a 2-0 lead against Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium through Ernest Nuamah and Felix Afena-Gyan. However, Gambia scored four times to complete a dramatic comeback.
The result leaves Ghana bottom of Group C without a point from their opening two matches. They had previously lost 2-0 away to Ivory Coast.
Queiroz leaves with a record of one win, two draws and four defeats from his seven matches in charge, with Ghana scoring five goals and conceding 10.
The 73-year-old’s latest spell with Ghana began in April, when he was appointed to lead the team at the 2026 World Cup. He guided the Black Stars to the knockout stage before they were eliminated by Colombia.
His initial contract ended after the World Cup, but he was reappointed on September 2.

Ghana now face a difficult task in their bid to qualify for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, with only the top two teams from each four-team group progressing.
