Belgium‘s goalkeeper, Koen Casteels, has decided to step away from the national team in objection to the upcoming reinstatement of his rival, Thibaut Courtois. Casteels has been the preferred choice for Belgium in the past year and a half, especially when Courtois opted out of matches due to a disagreement with former coach Domenico Tedesco. However, with Rudi Garcia taking over as Belgium’s coach in January, Courtois has expressed his willingness to make a comeback.

Expressing his concerns, Casteels mentioned in an interview with the Belgian podcast MidMid that he finds it peculiar how the football association has done a complete turnaround, embracing Courtois back into the team without hesitation. Courtois had previously refused to play under Tedesco following a dispute regarding the team’s captaincy in mid-2023. Casteels took over the goalkeeping duties at last year’s European Championship in Germany, where Belgium was eliminated in the round of 16.

Casteels, who had mainly played in the Bundesliga but now competes in Saudi Arabia, used to be Courtois’ understudy for a long time. Despite being considered one of the top goalkeepers globally with 102 international caps, the 32-year-old Courtois has met with Garcia and expressed his eagerness to rejoin the national squad last month.
Casteels expressed his surprise at Courtois having the autonomy to determine his return, questioning the decision-making process. His concern was not directed solely at Thibaut but also at the football association, believing it contradicts his principles regarding team sports and sports organisations. Consequently, he declared his unavailability for the national team effective immediately.
