Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola said he was satisfied with today’s FA Cup win against Manchester United.
Guardiola pointed out that the team is now turning to the Champions League in an attempt to win the triple crown this season.
“Now we can talk about the triple crown. Of course, we still have to win the Champions League. Against Manchester United, it is special for our city and our fans. We played really, really well. Really, really good; I’m very satisfied,” said Guardiola.
City defended their title in the Premier League and won the FA Cup today with a 2:1 victory against city rivals United, and the double scorer was Ilkay Gundogan, who scored both goals from volleys.
He scored the first goal, according to the BBC, after 12.91 seconds, which is the fastest goal in the history of the FA Cup final.
He scored the winning goal in the 51st minute after United equalized with Bruno Fernandes’ penalty kick in the 33rd.
“They played tight one-on-one and I didn’t expect them to defend so tight. In the second half, we had more space. Tomorrow and the day after tomorrow, the team will have days off. Then we have three or four training sessions to prepare for Inter. We will travel on Thursday morning after training,” said Guardiola.
On June 10, City will play in the Champions League final against Inter in Istanbul.
“This was important for us. The FA Cup is that good. I am a Barcelona fan, but I will love this club for the rest of my life. I know that today we gave our fans a good gift to enjoy against their neighbors”.
He said Gundogan had a great season and hoped the captain would extend his contract and stay at the club.
“He has knowledge, but also mentality. When you have these players who play games like they are friendly, they handle the pressure well because they want to have fun, and then they become a good team. Otherwise, you can’t do it,” said Guardiola.
City are trying to equal the achievement of Manchester United, who in 1999 became the only English club to win the Premier League, the FA Cup, and the Champions League.
