ERIK TEN HAG: I cannot claim that De Gea will be the first goalkeeper

The manager of Manchester United, Erik ten Hag, confirmed that David de Gea will be at “Old Trafford” next season, but also that it is not certain that he will be “number one”.

“De Gea will stay, but I cannot say that he will always be the main candidate for the role of the team’s first goalkeeper,” said the Dutch coach and added:

“I say that because in a club like Manchester United there should always be competition, in all positions. Footwork is not just my fad, it is what modern top football requires. If you watch the biggest teams, you can see that they know how to play defensively and use their goalkeeper as an additional defensive player. Otherwise, it is very easy for opponents to put pressure on your team. De Gea had to get better at that, and he showed improvement,” said Ten Hag.

Manchester United finished the 2022/23 season in third place, with 14 points less than city rivals and champions City.
