United stun City in derby triumph as Carrick makes dream start at Old Trafford

Manchester United marked the beginning of Michael Carrick’s interim reign with a commanding 2–0 victory over rivals Manchester City at Old Trafford, producing one of their most complete performances of the season.

The derby atmosphere was electric from the outset and United fed off the energy, pressing aggressively and playing with intensity that City struggled to match. The hosts nearly struck inside the opening minutes when Harry Maguire’s header from a Bruno Fernandes corner crashed against the post, setting the tone for a dominant first half.

United continued to threaten and twice thought they had taken the lead before the interval. Amad Diallo and Fernandes both found the net, only for the assistant’s flag to deny them on each occasion after marginal offside calls. City, despite enjoying long spells of possession, were largely kept at arm’s length, with Senne Lammens called into action only once to deny a Max Alleyne header.

The tempo dipped briefly after the restart, but the match burst back into life around the hour mark. City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma produced a series of outstanding saves to keep his side level, denying Amad, Casemiro and Bryan Mbeumo in quick succession.

However, United’s persistence finally paid off in the 65th minute. Fernandes surged forward on the counter before timing a perfectly weighted pass for Bryan Mbeumo, who finished first time into the bottom corner to give the hosts a deserved lead.

City looked short of ideas in response, struggling to involve Erling Haaland and lacking their usual sharpness in the final third. United, by contrast, sensed blood and doubled their advantage 14 minutes from time when Patrick Dorgu met Matheus Cunha’s cross, his effort going in off the post.

The scoreline could have been even more emphatic, with Amad hitting the woodwork and Mason Mount seeing a late goal ruled out for offside, but United comfortably saw out the contest to secure a memorable derby win.

The result lifts Manchester United provisionally into the Premier League’s top four and gives Carrick the perfect platform to build confidence during his interim spell. For City, the defeat represents another blow to their title ambitions and hands leaders Arsenal the opportunity to extend their advantage at the summit.
