Manchester United midfielder Youri Tielemans has apologised to Aston Villa after comments made following his summer move from the Midlands club sparked a negative reaction among Villa supporters.
The Belgium international joined Manchester United after the Red Devils triggered the £35 million release clause in his contract, bringing an end to his three-year spell at Villa Park. Tielemans had played an important role in Villa’s recent success, including their Europa League triumph.
However, the 29-year-old came under criticism after suggesting that Manchester United were a step above his former club.
Tielemans later addressed the issue on social media, admitting that he could have chosen his words more carefully.
He expressed his gratitude towards Aston Villa, saying he had enormous respect for the club and was thankful for everything they had done for him during his three years there. He also acknowledged that his comments had been poorly phrased and apologised to the club and its supporters.
Tielemans had originally praised Villa for helping him rediscover his best form but added that there were clubs he considered to be above the Midlands side, with Manchester United among them.
His remarks appeared to upset sections of the Villa fanbase, particularly given his contribution during his time at the club.
The midfielder has already become an important part of Michael Carrick’s plans at United and has featured regularly during pre-season as the team prepares for the new campaign.
Manchester United are preparing for a return to the Champions League after finishing third in the Premier League last season. Tielemans is expected to play a key role in strengthening a midfield that has been an area of concern for the club in recent years.
He has also spoken positively about his developing partnership with United captain Bruno Fernandes, highlighting the Portugal international’s ability to find space and create opportunities from midfield.
With the new Premier League season approaching, Tielemans will now look to put the controversy behind him and concentrate on establishing himself at Old Trafford.
