Tottenham Hotspur dropped two precious points in their battle against relegation after being held to a 1-1 draw by Leeds United at home on Monday night, with Mathys Tel going from match winner to villain in the space of half an hour.
Leeds arrived at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium having already secured their Premier League safety following West Ham’s defeat to Arsenal the previous day, and they made a decent fist of the opening exchanges. Antonin Kinsky produced a fine save to deny Joe Rodon’s header before Tottenham grew into the game as the half wore on, with chances for Richarlison and Pedro Porro going begging.
Tel broke the deadlock five minutes into the second half with a superb finish from the edge of the box, and Spurs looked in control. However, the young Frenchman then gifted Leeds a penalty when his attempted overhead kick in his own box struck Ethan Ampadu in the face. Dominic Calvert-Lewin stepped up and converted coolly to make it 1-1.
Leeds nearly nicked it late on when Sean Longstaff’s powerful effort was tipped onto the bar by a brilliant Kinsky save, while Tottenham’s late penalty appeals were waved away by VAR.
The draw leaves Spurs just a point above the relegation zone with two games remaining, while Leeds head home satisfied with a hard earned point.
