Dominik Szoboszlai scored a stunning late free-kick at Anfield to give Liverpool a narrow win over Arsenal, ending the Gunners’ unbeaten run and handing them their first Premier League defeat to Liverpool in six matches.
Arsenal had a rough start when William Saliba was forced off with an injury just five minutes in. Still, they created the first real chance of the game, with Noni Madueke testing Liverpool keeper Alisson with a strong shot.
The first half was cautious, but a poor pass from Arsenal’s keeper David Raya gave Virgil van Dijk a chance to pounce high up the pitch, though Liverpool couldn’t capitalise.
Despite being strong from corners this season, scoring 33 goals from set-pieces, Arsenal couldn’t break through Liverpool’s solid defence, and the first half ended 0-0.
Madueke, filling in for the absent Bukayo Saka on the right wing, continued to cause problems after the break. Liverpool thought they had scored just after the hour when Hugo Ekitike tapped in after Raya saved from Florian Wirtz, but the goal was ruled out for offside.
Arsenal brought on Eberechi Eze and captain Martin Odegaard, but neither made much of an impact.
With under 10 minutes left, Szoboszlai curled a beautiful free-kick past Raya to give Liverpool the lead. It was the 37th Premier League match in a row where Liverpool have scored.
Liverpool kept their perfect start to the season going, while Arsenal, despite a decent away performance, left empty-handed and lost early ground in the title race.
