Premier League to explain VAR decisions on social media during matches

The Premier League aims to address the frustration surrounding the VAR system by introducing a social media account that will offer timely updates and explanations concerning officiating and operational decisions for every match. Despite facing substantial criticism last season, VAR was voted to be retained by teams in June, with Wolverhampton Wanderers initiating a petition to abolish it.

“Since live VAR audio cannot be broadcasted due to football regulations, the Premier League Match Centre will relay near-live information from the VAR Hub through social media during a game,” stated the league on Tuesday. Alongside sharing refereeing decisions, the @PLMatchCentre account, also known as X, will provide insights directly from the VAR hub and refereeing experts, aiming to enhance transparency, as stated by the league. Additionally, experts from PGMOL, the league’s governing body for officiating, will clarify the rules of the game and offer further information and updates on the VAR decision-making processes when necessary.
