Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca hailed his team’s 2-1 victory over West Ham United as a significant outcome, as they managed to overturn a deficit and enhance their chances of securing a top-four finish in the Premier League. The lacklustre performance from Chelsea saw them trailing to Jarrod Bowen’s goal just before halftime, but they displayed improvement in the second half. Substitute Pedro Neto equalized the scoreline, and Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s own goal propelled the hosts into fourth place. This win marked only the second victory for Chelsea in their last eight league matches.
Maresca emphasized the magnitude of this triumph, stating, “It is a momentous achievement. The game was mentally challenging, especially when facing teams that adopt a defensive approach. Patience is crucial in such situations. With limited space available, one must keep the ball moving and seize the opportune moment.”
He further added, “In the second half, we made a comeback and thoroughly deserved to secure the victory. Our opponents were relying on our errors, but we mustn’t allow ourselves to become frustrated.”
Maresca made five substitutions in the second half, with Neto having the most significant impact when he replaced Jadon Sancho.
“The focus is always on the players, not the manager. It was simply a gut feeling we had about the substitutions during the match. We must enhance our performance in the attacking third by creating more chances and being more precise,” Maresca commented.
Chelsea currently has 43 points from 24 games, two more than both Manchester City and Newcastle United, who are the reigning champions.
Regarding the race for the top four positions, Maresca stated, “We are in the mix, and hopefully, we can remain in contention until the very end. Playing a game like this in February and still being in the running is a significant statement. It was a positive weekend for us in terms of results, and today’s victory made it even better.”
