Manchester United set to offload Andre Onana as exit looms

Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana is on the brink of departing Old Trafford, with the club actively exploring options to move him on.

The Cameroonian shot-stopper arrived in Manchester in 2023 for £47.2 million, per the BBC, replacing long-serving David De Gea. However, Onana’s tenure has been marked by inconsistency, with high-profile errors casting doubt over his role as United’s first-choice keeper.

With the club undergoing structural changes under minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, Onana’s future has come under scrutiny. Speaking to the BBC earlier this month, Ratcliffe pointed to the goalkeeper as part of a problematic legacy the new regime must address.

“If you look at the players we are buying this summer, that we didn’t buy, we’re buying Antony, we’re buying Casemiro, we’re buying Onana, we’re buying Hojlund, we’re buying Sancho,” Ratcliffe stated. “These are all things from the past, whether we like it or not, we’ve inherited those things and have to sort that out.”

Reports suggest United are already working on finding a buyer, with multiple destinations emerging. SportWitness indicates Onana could be involved in a transfer domino effect leading him to AC Milan, while TBR Football claims the Saudi Pro League is also a possible landing spot.

An inquiry has reportedly been made by clubs in Saudi Arabia, though Onana may prefer to remain in Europe to compete at the highest level. However, financial realities could dictate his next move, as European clubs may struggle to match United’s valuation of the player.

Despite Onana’s uncertain future, United are said to be increasingly impressed with backup goalkeeper Altay Bayindir. The Turkish international has been waiting for his opportunity and could step up should Onana depart.

United are keen to recoup a significant portion of their investment, with Transfermarkt valuing Onana at €32 million. The Saudi Pro League may be the most viable option to secure a lucrative sale, but with the summer transfer window approaching, the club will have to make key decisions regarding their goalkeeping department.
