Manchester United appoint Michael Carrick as permanent manager

Manchester United have confirmed Michael Carrick as their permanent manager following an impressive run in charge during his interim spell.

Carrick, a former United midfielder, took over in January after the club parted ways with Ruben Amorim. His early tenure quickly shifted momentum, with the team climbing the Premier League table and securing Champions League qualification.

During his interim period, Carrick oversaw several high-profile results, including a 2-0 win over Manchester City, a 3-2 victory away to Arsenal, and further wins against Liverpool, Chelsea, Aston Villa and Tottenham. While consistency against lower-ranked sides was less strong, United moved from seventh to third in the league standings under his guidance.

The club announced his appointment on a contract running until 2028, confirming his transition from interim to permanent head coach of the men’s first team.

In his first message after the appointment was confirmed, Carrick expressed pride at continuing in the role, noting his long association with the club since arriving as a player. He highlighted the responsibility of leading Manchester United and pointed to the progress made by the squad in terms of resilience, unity and determination. He also stated that the focus now is on moving forward with ambition and a clear purpose, with the aim of returning the club to competing for major honours.

Manchester United’s director of football Jason Wilcox supported the decision, stating that Carrick had earned the opportunity to continue in charge. He noted that results had improved during his spell, but also highlighted the alignment between Carrick’s approach and the club’s values and traditions. Wilcox also referenced the importance of Carrick’s role in restoring Champions League qualification and building a stronger culture at the training ground and within the dressing room.

Carrick’s appointment marks his second permanent managerial role, following his previous spell in charge of Championship side Middlesbrough.
