Manchester City have confirmed the appointment of Enzo Maresca as the club’s new manager, with the Italian set to succeed Pep Guardiola following the Spaniard’s departure after a decade at the Etihad Stadium.
Maresca has signed a three-year contract, marking his return to the club where he previously enjoyed success as head coach of City’s Elite Development Squad before serving as Guardiola’s assistant during the historic Treble-winning campaign.
The 46-year-old arrives with considerably more experience than when he first left Manchester. After a brief spell with Parma, he guided Leicester City back to the Premier League by winning the Championship before moving to Chelsea. During his time at Stamford Bridge, he secured the UEFA Conference League and FIFA Club World Cup, although his relationship with the club’s hierarchy eventually deteriorated, leading to his departure earlier this year.
Speaking after his appointment, Maresca said:
“Manchester City is a club I know very well and to have the chance to manage this team is a brilliant opportunity for me. I cannot wait to start coaching the players. I want us to win, play good football and enjoy the pressure of representing Manchester City.”
Replacing Guardiola represents one of the biggest challenges in world football. The Spaniard transformed City into one of Europe’s dominant clubs, winning six Premier League titles, the UEFA Champions League, numerous domestic cups and establishing one of the most successful eras in English football history.
City’s hierarchy believe Maresca’s familiarity with the club’s philosophy, combined with his tactical development and experience gained elsewhere, makes him the ideal candidate to lead the next chapter at the Etihad Stadium.
