Liverpool launch bold summer moves with record bid for Wirtz and Frimpong signing, as Alexander-Arnold heads to Real Madrid

Liverpool have wasted no time building on their recent Premier League title success, launching a high-profile summer revamp that includes a club-record £109 million bid for Florian Wirtz and the confirmed signing of his Bayer Leverkusen teammate Jeremie Frimpong for £29.5 million.

These moves come on the same day Liverpool agreed to an early departure for Trent Alexander-Arnold, who will join Real Madrid in a deal worth £10 million. The right-back’s contract was due to expire at the end of June, but both clubs reached an agreement for his early transfer ahead of the Club World Cup, which kicks off on 14 June.

Wirtz in Focus: Record-Breaking Bid

Head coach Arne Slot has identified Florian Wirtz as a priority target to elevate his title-winning side. The 22-year-old Germany international is considered one of Europe’s brightest talents, and Liverpool’s £109m (€130m) offer, which includes add-ons, easily surpasses their previous record fee of £85m paid for Darwin Núñez.

Although Manchester City had shown interest, they pulled out due to the high cost. Meanwhile, Wirtz has reportedly turned down Bayern Munich, favouring a move abroad, with Liverpool emerging as his destination of choice. Leverkusen, however, have so far valued him at £126m (€150m), and it remains to be seen if Liverpool’s offer will be accepted.

Wirtz, already capped 29 times by Germany, offers versatility across the front line and is eager for a fresh challenge after five years in the Bundesliga.

Frimpong Arrives to Bolster Options

Jeremie Frimpong has become Liverpool’s first summer signing, completing a move from Leverkusen after the club activated his €35m (£29.5m) release clause. The fee will be paid over three years.

While Frimpong is capable of playing at right-back, Liverpool do not see him as a direct replacement for Alexander-Arnold. The 24-year-old Dutch international, who can also feature as a wing-back or even a winger, will offer tactical flexibility—particularly valuable during Mohamed Salah’s absence for the Africa Cup of Nations (21 December–18 January).

Frimpong expressed excitement about the move:

“It went quite easy. For me, it was like, ‘Whatever you guys do, just get this done’.
Liverpool fans, I’m going to give my all—my energy, my work-rate—and hopefully we can win together, celebrate together, and get everything together.”

Frimpong, who plays internationally alongside Virgil van Dijk, Cody Gakpo, and Ryan Gravenberch, will officially become a Liverpool player on Sunday, when the transfer window opens.

Alexander-Arnold Departs for Real Madrid

In a significant move, Trent Alexander-Arnold will also officially join Real Madrid on Sunday. The Spanish giants reopened talks with Liverpool this week and agreed to pay a €10m (£8.5m) fee, along with covering the player’s wages for June, bringing the total package to £10m.

Liverpool had rejected an earlier £850,000 approach from Real in December, choosing instead to keep Alexander-Arnold for the remainder of the season, where he played a key role in their title-winning campaign.

A club statement confirmed the move:

“An offer has been accepted for Trent Alexander-Arnold from Real Madrid for his transfer upon the opening of the June transfer window.
Liverpool will receive a fee for his services, with the deal to be concluded once the window opens on 1 June.
Alexander-Arnold leaves with the club appreciative and grateful for his contribution to those successes.”

More Moves to Come?

Liverpool are not finished yet. The club has expressed interest in Bournemouth left-back Milos Kerkez, who is valued at £45m, and are expected to target another striker—especially if Luis Díaz or Darwin Núñez depart, with both attracting strong interest from Saudi Arabian clubs.

With a Premier League title secured and bold moves already underway, Liverpool are signalling their intent to remain at the summit of English football—and to challenge on all fronts again next season.
