Liverpool’s summer transfer plans have become increasingly complicated following the expected departure of Ibrahima Konaté, forcing the club to rethink how it strengthens its defence ahead of a new era under prospective manager Andoni Iraola.

The Reds had hoped to retain the French international, but his anticipated exit now leaves a significant gap at the heart of the defence. Liverpool’s recruitment team must decide whether to prioritise an experienced replacement or place trust in the club’s exciting young defensive prospects.
Sources close to the club remain optimistic about the long-term potential of Giovanni Leoni and Jeremy Jacquet. The two highly rated youngsters are regarded as among the most promising defenders in Europe, although questions remain over whether they are ready to immediately fill the void left by Konaté.
Leoni endured a frustrating first season after injury limited his opportunities, whilst Jacquet arrived from Rennes, facing the challenge of adapting to Premier League football and the expectations that come with playing for one of the world’s biggest clubs.
As a result, Liverpool continues to monitor alternative defensive targets. Club Brugge defender Joel Ordonez remains high on the club’s shortlist, with the Ecuadorian international impressing scouts through his composure, physicality, and maturity despite his young age.
The situation is made even more delicate by Virgil van Dijk’s age. Whilst the Dutch captain continues to perform at an elite level, he is now 34 and Liverpool are keen to manage his workload carefully rather than increase his responsibilities. Joe Gomez provides experienced cover but ongoing injury concerns mean he cannot be relied upon as the sole solution.

However, central defence is not the only area demanding attention. Liverpool are also preparing for life beyond Mohamed Salah and are actively assessing attacking reinforcements. RB Leipzig forward Yan Diomande is understood to be one of the club’s priority targets as they seek to refresh their frontline.
At full back, Inter Milan’s Denzel Dumfries has emerged as a player of interest. The Dutch international is admired for his athleticism, attacking threat, and experience at the highest level.
Yet Liverpool may face serious competition from Real Madrid. Reports in Spain and Italy suggest the European giants are considering activating the €25 million release clause contained in Dumfries’ contract with Inter. The clause becomes active during July and is viewed as a relatively affordable opportunity for a player of Dumfries’ quality and experience.
Should Real Madrid decide to trigger the clause, Liverpool could find themselves losing another target to the Spanish club. The prospect of competition from the Santiago Bernabéu may force the Reds to move quickly if they are serious about bringing the Netherlands international to Anfield.
Liverpool’s summer is increasingly becoming a balancing act between replacing departing stars, investing in youth, and ensuring the squad remains competitive both domestically and in Europe. The decisions taken over the coming weeks could shape the club’s future for years to come.
