The Championship play-off final between Hull City and Southampton could be postponed after the Saints were charged by the EFL over allegedly spying on their semi-final opponents, Middlesbrough.
Hull City owner Acun Ilicali has condemned those behind the so-called “Spygate” scandal, accusing them of bringing “evil” into football. The Tigers are currently scheduled to face Southampton in the Championship play-off final at Wembley next Saturday, but the showpiece fixture now risks being postponed.
Southampton have been charged by the English Football League after it was revealed that one of their analysts allegedly spied on Middlesbrough during a training session ahead of the first leg of their semi-final. The Saints could potentially be expelled from the play-offs, although any appeal process may delay the final.
Meanwhile, Middlesbrough’s players and staff have postponed their summer break and are set to return to training on Monday.
“I don’t want to make any statements because it’s something that is being investigated. We don’t know who is involved or who is responsible. At this time, it’s better for me not to comment.”
Although their opponents in the final may yet change, Hull City remain focused on their trip to Wembley, where they will battle for promotion to the Premier League after securing a dramatic play-off place on the final day. “It’s one match — a massive one for us,” said owner Acun Ilicali, who took over the club in 2022.
“If we win, we’ll be in the Premier League, and that’s our dream. This is a very united team — everyone is desperate for this game, and the fans are just as eager.”
He added that the outcome will likely come down to fine margins: “These matches are always evenly balanced, and key moments make the difference. Whether we face Southampton or Middlesbrough, it’s a 50-50 contest and we believe we have a real chance.”
