Emile Smith Rowe scored with his very first touch after coming off the bench in the second half, helping Fulham earn a 1-1 draw against Manchester United in the Premier League. The result meant Fulham avoided what would have been a ninth straight home defeat against United.
After a decent performance in their narrow 1-0 loss to Arsenal last week, Manchester United started well again along the River Thames. Matheus Cunha fired a long-range shot just over the bar early on. Then, after a clever move involving Patrick Dorgu and Mason Mount, Cunha hit the post.
United looked the stronger team in the first half, but Fulham’s goalkeeper Bernd Leno stayed solid, saving from both Bruno Fernandes and Cunha in quick succession.
United were handed a great chance to take the lead when Calvin Bassey pulled down Mount in the box. But Fernandes surprisingly sent the penalty high over the bar.
The second half started much like the first, and United eventually went ahead when Bryan Mbeumo’s corner was flicked on by Leny Yoro, bounced off Rodrigo Muniz, and went in past Leno.
In response, Fulham boss Marco Silva brought on Raul Jimenez and Emile Smith Rowe. Smith Rowe quickly made an impact by scoring from Alex Iwobi’s cross, finishing smartly past Altay Bayındır.
With less than 10 minutes to go, both teams pushed for a winner. Harry Maguire went close for United with a header, but neither side could find a second goal.
In the end, the match finished 1-1, meaning United’s manager Ruben Amorim now has only seven wins from his first 29 league matches.
