De Bruyne’s Late Winner Keeps City’s Champions League Hopes Alive

Manchester City and Kevin De Bruyne have always had impeccable timing — and that was on full display again as the Belgian maestro’s decisive goal sealed a fourth consecutive Premier League victory, edging past Wolves 1-0. The win lifts City into third place and moves them closer to securing a Champions League spot.

It was a hard-earned victory that City will savour, even more so after a lighthearted team talk from Neil Warnock during Thursday’s training lifted spirits. Wolves, despite their defeat, will rue their missed chances; they twice struck the woodwork and were the more threatening side in open play. But in crucial moments, few can match De Bruyne’s composure and experience.

“I’m pretty sure it’s not easy for him, but that goal was massive for us — it lifted the whole team,” said manager Pep Guardiola. “He doesn’t need to prove anything anymore. I know his quality and level.”

In what was his penultimate home appearance for City, De Bruyne was given license to roam in the final third. He and Ilkay Gündogan alternated through the centre, while Omar Marmoush and Jérémy Doku stretched Wolves’ defence from the flanks. Under Vítor Pereira, Wolves have shed their early-season fragility, arriving at the Etihad on a six-match winning run and showing no signs of intimidation.

They should have taken the lead when Matheus Cunha slid a perfectly weighted pass through City’s flat-footed defence to Jean-Ricner Bellegarde. Racing through on goal, Bellegarde only needed to square the ball to an unmarked Marshall Munetsi but overhit the pass, letting the opportunity slip away.

City looked vulnerable to Wolves’ counter-attacks. Rayan Aït-Nouri came closest for the visitors, first striking the post before seeing his rebound blocked on the line by Josko Gvardiol. Though City dominated possession, Wolves carried the greater threat until Nico O’Reilly finally tested José Sá with a long-range effort just past the half-hour mark.

City eventually punished Wolves’ wastefulness. Gündogan fed Doku, who dazzled with quick footwork before slipping the ball to De Bruyne. The captain, in perfect stride, slotted home into the bottom corner, sparking chants of “There’s only one Kevin De Bruyne” around the Etihad.

With no contract extension on the table, De Bruyne will depart City when his deal expires this summer. Despite injuries in recent seasons, he has rediscovered much of his trademark energy and drive in recent weeks. “A lot of teammates have told me it’s sad I have to go, but that’s how life goes sometimes,” De Bruyne reflected. “I don’t know what’s next, but I know I can still play here.”

Wolves’ Matheus Cunha — sure to attract interest in the summer — continued to trouble City’s defence as the hosts’ play grew increasingly careless. Guardiola replaced O’Reilly, who had struggled in possession, with Manuel Akanji to shore up the backline. Erling Haaland, fit again, remained unused on the bench.

Aït-Nouri risked compounding Wolves’ frustration with a reckless challenge on Bernardo Silva, planting his studs on the midfielder’s ankle. After a lengthy VAR review, no further action was taken.

“In the end, I’m very proud of my players and supporters — only the result was wrong,” Pereira commented.

De Bruyne left the pitch to a standing ovation with seven minutes remaining. With Bournemouth’s visit next marking his final home game, the stage is set for an emotional farewell to one of City’s greatest ever players. Based on this performance, though, his influence is far from fading just yet.
