Chelsea close in on Xabi Alonso

Chelsea are considering a move to appoint Xabi Alonso as the club’s new head coach.

The Spaniard is understood to be receptive to the opportunity, although no final decision has been made as Chelsea continue their search for a permanent replacement for Liam Rosenior. Outgoing AFC Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola also remains a leading candidate for the role.

Alonso, 44, has been without a managerial position since leaving Real Madrid CF on January 12, when he was replaced by reserve-team coach Álvaro Arbeloa.

Xabi Alonso was only seven months into the three-year contract he signed after succeeding Carlo Ancelotti last summer, having arrived at Real Madrid CF on the back of a historic campaign in which he guided Bayer 04 Leverkusen to their maiden Bundesliga title in 2023-24.

Chelsea FC dismissed Liam Rosenior on April 23 after fewer than four months in charge. Rosenior had been appointed following the departure of Enzo Maresca in January, with Calum McFarlane subsequently placed in interim control for the remainder of the season.

Earlier this month, The Athletic reported that Chelsea’s shortlist for the permanent head coach role includes Alonso, outgoing AFC Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola and Fulham FC boss Marco Silva.
