Boxing Day showdown at Old Trafford as Manchester United host Newcastle

Manchester United and Newcastle United will provide the Premier League’s only Boxing Day fixture as the festive calendar takes a slightly different shape this season, with Ruben Amorim’s side welcoming Eddie Howe’s Magpies to Old Trafford.

With both teams chasing valuable points ahead of a demanding New Year fixture list, this traditional encounter carries added significance for two sides separated by fine margins in the league table.

Both managers head into the contest severely stretched, with seven players unavailable for each team. Manchester United will be without captain Bruno Fernandes, who was forced off at halftime against Aston Villa after appearing to suffer a hamstring issue. His absence is a major blow, given his influence since arriving at Old Trafford in 2020, with the team’s league win rate dropping sharply when he does not feature. Kobbie Mainoo is also sidelined following a training injury, while Matthijs de Ligt and Harry Maguire are not yet ready to return. Bryan Mbeumo, Amad Diallo and Noussair Mazraoui are away on Africa Cup of Nations duty, though Casemiro is available again after completing a suspension.

Newcastle could be boosted by the return of goalkeeper Nick Pope, but remain without William Osula, Kieran Trippier, Tino Livramento, Dan Burn, Sven Botman, Jamaal Lascelles and Emil Krafth, leaving Howe short of defensive options for the trip to Manchester.

Recent head-to-head meetings have leaned heavily in Newcastle’s favour, with the Magpies winning five of the last six encounters, including two clean sheet victories at Old Trafford. Manchester United’s only success in that run came in a dramatic 3-2 win in May 2024, while goals have been difficult to come by for the hosts in the other fixtures. However, Newcastle have won just once in their last ten league visits to Old Trafford and have also struggled away from home this season, collecting only one away league victory so far.

United arrive with impressive attacking numbers, having scored 31 league goals, joint second best in the division, while also leading the Premier League for total shots and shots on target. Defensive frailties remain an issue, though, with 28 goals conceded, the highest among the current top 14 sides. With Fernandes and Mbeumo absent, responsibility in attack may fall on Matheus Cunha, who leads the team for total shots.

Newcastle, by contrast, boast a more solid defensive record, conceding 22 goals, but have struggled to consistently convert chances, scoring just 23 times so far this season. Summer signing Nick Woltemade has been their most reliable attacking outlet with seven league goals, while Bruno Guimaraes continues to orchestrate play from midfield.

Both sides tend to produce decisive moments late in matches, with the majority of their goals scored and conceded between the 75th and 90th minute. With fatigue, injuries and squad rotation all factors on Boxing Day, the closing stages could once again prove decisive in what promises to be a finely balanced contest at Old Trafford.
