Manchester City‘s recent acquisition, Nico Gonzalez, experienced a brief stint on the field, clocking just 22 minutes before sustaining an injury in his team’s 2-1 victory over Leyton Orient in the FA Cup on Saturday.
The midfielder faced a challenging initiation into English football as City advanced to the fourth round, and his participation in Tuesday’s Champions League fixture against Real Madrid is now uncertain. City invested £50 million to secure the 23-year-old Spaniard from Porto, aiming to fill the gap left by Rodri’s long-term injury. Guardiola commented, “I think Nico got to understand immediately what England is and the referees,” acknowledging the challenges without VAR assistance. “It’s unfortunate because I’m unsure of the severity of the kick, but he couldn’t continue.” Meanwhile, Guardiola faced jeers from Orient supporters when his team was behind but felt relieved when Kevin de Bruyne, coming off the bench, netted a late goal to secure the win.

“After the initial ten minutes, we performed exceptionally well. It’s beyond our control,” stated Guardiola. “This marks my ninth year in England, and I’ve participated numerous times in this remarkable competition. The energy and ambiance from the crowd here are unmatched elsewhere. The atmosphere was outstanding, even when they chant, ‘you’re getting sacked in the morning’!”
