Chelsea's Squad Revamp: Pochettino Eyes Smaller Group as 15 Players Face Possible Exits

Chelsea is reportedly planning to offload as many as 15 players during the summer transfer window in order to streamline their bloated squad. The need to comply with Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations and the absence of European football have contributed to this decision, along with new head coach Mauricio Pochettino’s preference for a smaller group.

Recent reports suggest that Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and loanee Joao Felix will be allowed to leave Stamford Bridge, with Chelsea informing Atletico Madrid of their decision regarding the latter. These two players are among the 15 listed by the club for potential departures, according to the Daily Mail.

The club has traditionally generated funds through the sale of academy graduates, and there are indications that more homegrown players could be on the transfer list. Trevoh Chalobah, Conor Gallagher, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, and Callum Hudson-Odoi are reportedly available for transfer. Additionally, there are uncertainties surrounding N’Golo Kante’s contract renewal, and the Frenchman may be allowed to move to another club.

Chelsea also needs to raise funds by selling squad members such as Hakim Ziyech and Christian Pulisic, while Mateo Kovacic may be sold rather than offered a new contract. Defenders Kalidou Koulibaly and Cesar Azpilicueta are also expected to leave, with Koulibaly potentially going out on loan if a suitable fee cannot be secured. The club is considering bringing in a new goalkeeper to challenge Kepa Arrizabalga, making Edouard Mendy available for transfer. Additionally, Denis Zakaria will return to Juventus after his loan spell, as Chelsea has decided not to exercise their option to buy.

Chelsea’s owners, Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital, reportedly aim to raise approximately £280m through player sales, with a reduction in the wage bill also being a contributing factor. These funds will help facilitate Pochettino’s desired signings before the start of the 2023-24 season.

The upcoming transfer window promises significant changes for Chelsea as they reshape their squad and look to meet financial obligations while also building a team capable of competing at the highest level under Pochettino’s guidance.
