The football team of Argentina traveled to Brazil for the qualification match for the 2026 World Cup.
The match at the famous “Marakana” was supposed to start at 1:30 a.m. local time, but mass incidents, in which the police also participated, postponed the start of the match.
In one part of the stand, where the away fans are, there was a massive conflict with Brazil fans. The police got involved and tried to quell these disturbances with additional aggression, which led the others to join the fight. Allegedly, there are also seriously injured.
In response to these events, the players of Argentina, led by Lionel Messi, decided to leave the field and for a long time it was not known whether the game would even start. At one point, they thought about postponing it, but in the end they still returned to the field.
Soon after the return, a heated discussion followed between the players, so at one point the situation on the field was on the verge of a physical conflict.
The referees and law enforcement officials managed to partially calm the atmosphere, both on the field and in the stands, so the match started half an hour late.
