The Cameroon selection were crowned champions of the first-ever African Unity Cup after defeating Nigeria 4-3 on penalties in an exciting final at the Sirens Stadium.
The final ended 2-2 after regular time, with Cameroon keeping their composure in the penalty shootout to lift the inaugural title in front of a good crowd of supporters.
The tournament featured six teams made up largely of players competing in the Malta FA leagues. Cameroon, Nigeria, Gambia, Sudan, Ghana and Kenya all took part in the competition, which was played in a league format. The top two teams at the end of the league stage qualified for the final.
The event aimed to celebrate African unity and diversity through football while providing players based in Malta with the opportunity to represent their communities in a competitive environment.
Following the final, President of the Organising Committee Jonathan Onuoha expressed his satisfaction with the success of the tournament. He thanked all the participating teams for their commitment throughout the competition and said he hopes the African Unity Cup will continue to grow in the coming years.
The successful first edition has laid a strong foundation for what organisers hope will become an annual fixture on Malta’s football calendar, bringing together African communities through sport.
